About Dance & Music Duets featuring Emily Coates & Charlie Burnham AND Rachel Berensen & Taylor Ho Bynum
One Sunday a month from February through May, two cooperative performance groups exploring the intersection of music and dance will be in residency at the Jalopy Theater in Red Hook, Brooklyn. Combining the spirits of the Judson Church and Grand Union dance experiments with Charles Mingus’ jazz workshops, the residency will offer a regular platform and open environment for each ensemble to pursue new directions in sound and movement.
Dancer Emily Coates (whose performance credits include New York City Ballet, Mikhail Baryshnikov’s White Oak Dance Project, Twyla Tharp, and Yvonne Rainier) joins forces with violinist/vocalist Charlie Burnham (Cassandra Wilson, James Blood Ulmer, and Medeski, Martin & Wood) in Emily’s Tiny Theater. The two performers have arrived at a delightful approach to spontaneous theater, combining their talents to create unique vignettes of music, movement and words.
The Ever Antler Collective features dancers Rachel Bernsen and Melanie Maar, cornetist Taylor Ho Bynum, and percussionist/vocalist Abraham Gomez-Delgado. While all four artists are active leading their own projects as choreographers and composers and have diverse experiences ranging from Anthony Braxton and Robert Ashley to Luciana Achugar and Fischerspooner, this quartet brings them together as equal partners in a shared endeavor. They investigate principles of roles, crafts, pleasure, story, risk and meaning in performance, practicing spontaneous action as a way to experience and share composition and choreography live.
Each month will also feature a different musical opening act in addition to the two interdisciplinary performance groups.
On February 12th, Burnham will be joined by guitarist Marvin Sewell.
On March 4th, Burnham and Bynum will pay duo tribute to Ray Nance, the Ellingtonian patron saint of the violin and cornet.
Bynum will duet with drummer Tomas Fujiwara on April 1st,
and Gomez-Delgado will close the series on May 6th.
