About Dawn Hiatt

Her music is dark yet hopeful. Her lyrics are personal yet inviting. She is a compelling contradiction - strong yet vulnerable, yearning yet serene. Combining a voice reminiscent of Patty Griffin or Emmylou Harris with a raw edge evocative of Lucinda Williams, Dawn Hiatt continues to win hearts and ears around the country with her touching and genuine sound.

Born to a family of musicians and race car drivers, Dawn grew up singing in church in Western New York. Her family eventually resettled to the farmlands of Southern New Jersey outside Philadelphia. After finishing college, Dawn shuffled off to New York City where she began her career in writing and performing original music. This constant movement has provided her life with many twists and turns that continue to motivate her career in music. Her experiences caring for orphans in Guatemala, teaching inner city middle school students in New York, working as a nanny in Chicago and travelling all over America have been instrumental in her songwriting.

She has been awarded winner of the Philadelphia Songwriters Project Songwriting Contest in both 2008 and 2009. She continues to perform sold out shows at Philadelphia's premier listening room, The Tin Angel, and has appeared at presitigiuos listening rooms including World Cafe Live, The Philadelphia Folk Festival, The Bethlehem Musik Fest, and The Kimmel Center.

The album "The Waking Hours" has received regular airplay on WXPN 88.5, was selected as XPN's "Pick of the Day" and was also featured on 93.7 WSTW Hometown Heroes. The album has been referred to as a mix between Joni Mitchell and Joan Baez with hints of indie-queen, Jenny Lewis. Dawn Hiatt is currently working on a new record and is planning to tour extensively throughout the US this summer. Dawn's new music is evolving, as her leanings towards classic country increasingly compliment her distinctive signature sound.
