About Veveritse and Jalopy Theatre host the HONK! NYC Festival
HONK NYC! is a spin-off of the Boston-area HONK! Festival of Activist Street Bands, a summit of more than thirty such ensembles taking place annually over Columbus Day weekend. Founded in 2006, HONK!, and its three offshoots, HONK NYC!, HONK!TX in Austin and Seattle’s HONK! Fest West, celebrate the creative movement of politically active, socially minded, and musically diverse professional and community-based street bands working in the United States and Europe today. This year marks the sixth annual convergence of radical marching bands presented in New York City.
There will be a short parade to Jalopy Theatre with Environmental Encroachment and Church Marching Band at 8pm, start location to be determined!!
Veveritse Brass Band finds its inspiration in the drama of the Romany(Gypsy) music of the Balkans. With an eye to the powerful exactitude of these melodies, Veveritse makes room for play. Slippery, squirrelly even, they may start off running almost too fast, only to drop the bottom out; what begins sonorous and jagged straightens up, and carries you into the night....dancing, sighing. With two trumpets, a saxophone, four mid-horns, a tuba and two drummers, they are ten deep, creating not a wall of sound, but a loud tapestry. Members of the band also play in other great NYC bands like Romashka, Hungry March Band, Zlatne Uste, The Woes, Ansambl Mastika, and Stagger Back Brass Band....not to mention the infamous and nefarious "Top Secret Attack Band"! Veveritse, with it's theatrical bent, has already scored two different nights of films, played benefits, parties and numerous clubs. They are available for all kinds of occasions....weddings, private parties, afternoon tea, preschool graduations, feline coronations and divorces.
Pink Puffers Brass Band (PPBB) is an exciting drum and brass “phunk” band from Rome, Italy. PPBB returns to the United States for the third time to share their young, ebullient, and infectious energy and music with the people of Boston, Providence, and New York. Influenced by brass bands such as Youngblood Brass Band, Dirty Dozen Brass Band, New Orleans 2nd Lines and all the bands playing at HONK!, their goal is to make people have fun. WHY PINK? “Because a pink band playing Black music is an hymn to anti-racism; because the Pink Panther is pink (and swing, and jazz, and like PPBB); because pink people are against war and stupidity generally speaking; because pink is the color of the flowers that will become peaches; and because pink puffers are clinical patients affected by emphysema (and emphysema is a disease of one who works
blowing, like them with their wind-instruments!)” pinkpuffers.com
